Storytelling at South Jordan Gale Center

gale center south jordan

If you or anyone in your family are Beatrix Potter and Peter Rabbit lovers, you will want to make it a priority to make it to the Gale Center in South Jordan to hear master storyteller Carol Esterreicher. She has prepared an entire program on the life and stories of Beatrix Potter.

If you have a little extra time, go early and explore the rest of the Gale Center. It is small, but if you have little ones, they will love it. Particularly if they love to play house. Or store. Or school. If you don't have extra time, go on a different day. It is totally worth the trip. It's also a great resource for home school groups.

Family Health Fair, Riverton, Utah

riverton, ut

Now, I know what you're thinking:  a health fair?  Really?  Not exactly what I wanted to do with my Saturday.  But, BUT, the Health Fair this weekend at Riverton Hospital promises to be totally worth your time.  Why?  This is not your average health fair, just a few booths with representatives handing out pamphlets. Nope.  This health fair will feature the Mega Lungs exhibit: the world's very first walk through inflatable lungs.  This will mark the first time that the Mega Lungs exhibit has visited Utah. In addition to the Mega Lungs event, there will be a fascinating behind the scenes look into surgery.  You can even take a tour of the operating rooms of the hospital.

If your kids are less into surgery and human anatomy, there will also be firetrucks, ambulances, and police cruisers on display for the kids.  As well as a Teddy Bear Emergency Clinic where kids will learn how to stich up and take care of bears and their owies.  You can get a complete listing of events at features at the Riverton Hospital Website.

Utah Kids Ready to Read has identified five important, yet fun components of early literacy: Talking, Singing, Reading, Writing and Playing. UEN has created a webquest to help you easily find useful online literacy based resources, to sample activities that support the 5 early literacy components, and keep the momentum going as you and your child begin the journey toward literacy.
By participating in this webquest, we hope you will find additional ways to bring reading readiness resources to your family. In addition to using books and magazines to find out about Early Literacy, why not also use the power of the Internet?
Utah Kids Ready to Read provides links full of activities and guides you through the webquest. Once all the activities have been completed, you will be sent a free book.

Bean Museum, BYU

wildlife museum

The Bean Museum at BYU is preparing for a major overhaul.  Starting July 1, the Bean Museum will be closed until Fall 2013.  So, basically, you have 2 weeks to get down there and visit the museum one last time before they hit their metamorphosis stage.  We love the Bean Museum, and for the little kids it's almost as cool as the zoo.  The animals don't move, obviously, but you get a better look at them.  So, get to the Bean Museum between now and July 1.

If you just can't make it and you live in Provo, the Bean Museum is beginning an awesome program: Free FHE shows to anyone in Provo City.  The museum will put on shows to groups of 15 people or more, and they are all reptile shows. If you fall into that category and are interested in having the museum come to you, you can reserve your show on their site.

In addition to the FHE program, the Bean Museum will be starting a wildlife hour at Utah County Libraries.  Classes are held weekly at 11:00 am.  You can learn all about wildlife with games, crafts and activities.  Classes will run June 18 until August 10 and the schedule is as follows:

Monday: Springville Library
Tuesday: Mapleton Library
Wednesday: Orem Library
Thursday: American Fork Library
Friday: Pleasant Grove Library

Gateway Chalk Art Festival

festival in utah

If you are an art lover, and even if you're not, you must check out the Gateway Chalk Art Festival.  My husband and I stumbled across it a few years ago and I was blown away by the quality of the artwork.  The festival itself is free.  There is an entry fee for those wanting to enter artwork into the competition, but to come and see is open to everyone.  I cannot recommend it enough. Your kids will be delighted with the work, and if memory serves there is a plethora of chalk and empty space provided to encourage your burgeoning artists. And you may as well bring your swimsuits and let them take a run in  the Gateway fountains.  Take a lunch and make a day out of it!

If you go:
Friday June 15 and Saturday June 16

This is the Place Monument, Salt Lake City

this is the place heritage park free admission 2012
Great News!  This is the Place Monument and Heritage Park is FREE this Friday, June 8 from 10:00 to 5:00.  Sponsored by the Huntsman's, the park is open to everyone!  A little bit of advice from a mom who has ventured out on free day before:
  • Bring your lunch and LOTS of water. You will walk a lot.
  • Wear tennis shoes, ones that can get dirty. Because you will be walking in dust the entire time.
  • Did I mention that you should bring water?
  • Plan on doing lots and lots of walking.  Parking is not close.
  • Unless it is absolutely necessary, don't bring the stroller.  It will be more hinderance than help.
  • There will be A LOT of people there and don't be surprised if you have to wait in line to park.
  • Oh, and bring some water.
  • Wear sunscreen, but don't put it on there. Did I mention the dust?
Don't get me wrong, my kids love this, and I like it too, I just think you should know what you're getting into.  Hope to see you there!  I'll be the one dragging 4 kids up the hill all loaded up with water bottles. :)
