Eagle Mountain is holding their annual city celebration, Pony Express Days, this week.  Through June 2, there are events going on almost every day.  All of the events are NOT free, but I thought I would point out the few that are, in case you are interested.

  • Family Fun Night: May 29 from 4 to 8 at Nolan Park.  The kids will receive free cotton candy, popcorn, and carnival game tickets.  (FYI: The carnival tickets are for City-provided games, not the carnival rides running Wednesday through Saturday.)

  • Grand Parade: The parade will be held Saturday June 2 at 10:00 am. The route will begin Hidden Hollow Elementary on Pony Express Parkway, and will go to the LDS Stake Center at 4506 E. Pony Express Parkway.
  • Movie in the Park: Come watch Soul Surfer at Silverlake Amphitheatre, Thursday May 30 at Dusk.  (around 8:00).
  • Scavenger Hunt: This scavenger hunt is for children ages 4-7. You can print off an entry form on the Eagle Mtn. website. Win a completion prize by bringing the completed form and any collected items to the Smith's in Saratoga Springs on May 30 and June 1.

What are you doing this weekend?

Did you know that this weekend Hill Air Force Base will open up the gates and let you in to seen one of the most amazing sights you have ever experienced?  Warriors Over the Wasatch  Air Show!  If you have boys, if you have kids who love airplanes, you must make at least an effort to make it up there to check it out.  You can check out their website or call the hot line for more info, but I will tell you this:

  • You will not be there for a couple of hours.  Plan to be there most of the day,
  • Bring blankets and chairs to sit on.
  • Bring water and sunscreen.
  • Don't forget the stroller and wagons
  • If you have little kids, bring ear plugs because it's going to get loud.

Utah Waterfall Hikes

You know what is really fun to do in the summer?  Find all the coolest waterfalls in Utah and hike them! I stumbled across a great site that lists a bunch of them and is a great resource for your exploring days. Waterfall Hiking has great info about all of them. Waterfall hikes are best in the spring when it is warm enough to hike, but not hot enough that the snow has completely melted and the waterfalls are reduced to a trickle.  If you know about a great one that isn't listed at Waterfall Hiking, I would love to hear about it!

Community Exploration Card

Here is a great little tip for you:  in the same vein as checking out a pass to state Parks, you can check out a Community Exploration Card from any Salt Lake City Public Library location. To specify, it needs to be City Library, as apposed to a County one for it to work.  A Community Exploration Card will provide free admission to Red Butte Garden, Discovery Gateway, The Utah Museum of Natural History and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts.

These passes are available at the beginning of each month, and are good for that whole month, but there are a limited amount of passes available each month.  To get more info, give the library a call at 801-524-8200.

Date Night?

evening events in provo

If you read CJane, you know about the Rooftop Concert Series. If not, well then, let me enlighten you!  The first Friday night of every month there is a free outdoor concert in Provo.  This month, this week in fact, is Peter Breinholt.  The concert starts at 8:00, but you can head to the Provo Towne Square Rooftop and start camping out as early as 6:00.

This would make a great date night, or if your kids are a little bit older and can handle a late night, a really fun time for the whole family. Peter Breinholt is great and I am willing to bet there will be dancing.  To get more info on the event, you can check out the the Rooftop Concert Series website.

Kennecott Copper Mines

Last weekend we took the kids to check out Kennecott Copper Mines.  I haven't been since I was a kid and my husband had never been, so we were both pretty excited.   I was a little nervous that the kids would be bored, because I couldn't remember what was there.  Really, all I could remember was the giant tire.   Because who can forget that?
Turns out, the Copper Mine is pretty awesome.  We watched a video that my kids actually listened to.  And the most amazing part, after the video when were walking through the visitor center my kids were pointing stuff out and explaining things to me that they learned from it.  Um, awesome.

And the obligatory massive tire picture.

Honestly, if you have little boys you must take them, just for the trucks. My three year old wanted more than anything to get close to the big trucks. Alas, that requires a special permit.  Watching them from afar was pretty awesome, however.
IF YOU GO, GO IN MAY!
All this month, The Kennecott Copper Mine is FREE!  You read that right.  You need to print off a coupon that you can find at the Kennecott Website.
Hours:
7 Days a Week
8:00am to 7:00pm
Cars will not be permitted after 7:00pm.
