National Park Fee Free Day!

If you are an outdoors kind of family, you will definitely want to get out there this weekend. Saturday, get in free to over 100 National parks.  These parks usually charge an admission fee, sometimes a steep one, to see their wonders. But if you can make it this Saturday, Sept. 29, you are in!  Take a weekend trip to Southern Utah and really make it worth your while!  Just FYI, if you go and camp, this free weekend does not cover the fees incurred for reservation or camping fees.

Discovery Gateway FREE Day!

free things to do in Utah

If your kids love the Discovery Gateway Children's museum as much as mine do, you will jump for joy on this one:  The Discovery Gateway is FREE Sunday Sept. 16.  Open from noon to 6:00, you go, you get in free. Thank to the Zoo, Arts and Parks Grant you're invited to bring your family down for a fantastic day. If you've never been, this is your chance.  My kids could live at the Discovery Gateway, between the ball maze, the rock wall and the helicopter, we spend hours and hours there whenever we go.  So, take advantage of this FANTASTIC deal!

Library Storytimes

local library storytimes

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, if you are in need of some tv free entertainment during the day, the library is the best place to be.  Libraries all over the Salt Lake Valley hold story times almost daily. The majority of which are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, with a few scattered times on Monday and Friday. You can find the complete schedule of Salt Lake County Library times on the Library's web calendar.

Utah County libraries are a little trickier to nail down.

You can find info about Davis County Libraries story times and events on their website.
Weber County Libraries also host storytimes, and you can find details on their website.

Homeschool Field Trips in Utah

I don't homeschool. Some days I wish that I did.  But, I know that this home is happier because Mommy's patience just couldn't take it. But I was having a chat with a friend the other day about it, weighing the pros and cons.  And one of the pros that we got stuck on were all the fantastic field trips that we could take our kids on.  There are so many amazing free venues around the valley to take advantage of!  So, I thought I would put together a list, further the daydream, and maybe be a resource for moms who do homeschool.  Some of these are probably already on your list:

Wheeler Farm: Open Monday through Saturday, 9:00 to 5:00.  Learn about farm animals, growing vegetables, farm equipment.

Church History Museum: Monday through Friday, 9:00 to 9:00, Sat. and Sunday 10:00 to 5:00. While this is a religious museum, there are many exhibits concerning the history of Utah.

Jordan Valley Conservation Garden: Monday to Friday 8:00 to 5:00.  Great for learning about gardening, conserving water and recognizing different types of plant life.

Sweets Candy Company Factory Tours:  Tours by appt. only, Monday through Friday 8:40 to 3:30.  Tours are not available between Labor Day and Halloween.  Such a sweet glimpse into a factory setting.

Gale Center: Tuesday through Friday, 10 to 6.  Call for large groups or guided tours.  The Gale Center has information about the history of South Jordan, and is a lot of fun to visit.

Pumpkin Point Farms: Monday through Saturday, 10:00 to 7:00.  One of the few free pumpkin patches in Utah!

Sorensen Home: Monday 6:00 to 8:00, Wednesday through Saturday 12:00 to 4:00.  Larger groups are encouraged to call ahead.  A glimpse into life in the 1800's.

Gilgal Sculpture Garden:  An introduction to sculpture in a hidden treasure of a garden.

BYU Museum of Art: Mon-Tues. 10:00 to 6:00, Wed.-Fri. 10:00 to 9:00.  This would be a fantastic lesson in fine art and the appreciation of it.

BYU Museum of Paleontology: Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 5:00.  When you're going through the dinosaur unit, this is the place to go.

Hill Aerospace Museum: Everyday 9 to 4:30.  This place is amazing for a history of flight and will amaze your little boys.

Did I miss anything?  Looking over this list again makes me seriously reconsider this homeschooling thing.  Maybe someday. . .

Red Butte Garden Free Day

It's Labor Day and if you aren't at Red Butte Gardens, what are you thinking?  It's free today and lest you think it's boring, this was the location my 8 year old requested for her birthday outing.  Go. It's awesome.
